The Biometrics Institute has announced it will produce a guide titled “Understanding Biometrics – Considerations for Implementing a Biometric System,” with the cooperation of the Technology Innovation Expert Group (TIEG).

The guide is meant to be an accessible resource for members considering using biometrics, particularly first-time users, and for those considering upgrading biometric systems in use. It was previously known as the Good-Practice Implementation Guide.

“Using biometrics does not automatically guarantee success,” the Institute notes in a blog post introducing the guide. “It needs to be done well, and the result has to be fit for purpose. Are they being used in the right way? Are they reliable? Cost effective? Do they safeguard privacy?”

The guide has been developed over the last two years, and includes thinking from several experts in the field. It will be updated as technology progresses, and be available free to Biometrics Institute members.

The Biometric Institute will also hold a virtual member meeting on “Good Practices for Implementing Biometrics” on May 10.

The Institute and the United Nations Counter-Terrorism Committee Executive Directorate (UNCTED) announced in February they will launch a compendium of good practices and recommendations for biometrics use in support of UN Security Council resolution 2322 in June.
