UK Ministry of Defence looks to replace its Biometric Data Capture System

The UK Ministry of Defence (MoD) has issued a tender to replace the current Biometric Data Capture System, Government Computing reports.

The Biometric Data Capture System provides the ability to biometrically enroll personnel at both fixed locations and on patrol, to screen enrollments against subsets of data and load biometrics to UK and non UK biometric databases. The current non-specialist operated forensic and biometric data collection and verification system goes out of service in March 2020 and must be replaced.

The new Biometric Data Capture System should be capable of capturing and storing an individual’s biometric data including eye and flat finger as well as to verify an individual’s identity during screening biometric data. The system shall also store enrollment records and sub sets of data and synchronize operational data. It will be required to interface with multiple government biometric databases, and the supplier will be required to provide in-service support to meet operational requirements, including deployments to operational theaters abroad.

The contract length is three years with priced options to extend for four additional one-year periods and the value is estimated to be between £10m and £20m.

The Home Office recently released its long-awaited Biometrics Strategy, which lays out plans for the continued expansion of biometric use by UK government agencies.
